What to Expect from Our Trauma-Informed Addiction Programmes at White River Manor

Published on June 11, 2025

If you are considering treatment for an addiction, whether you have a substance use disorder or another type of dependency like work addiction, you may wonder what to expect in terms of treatment and what options might be suitable for your needs.

It may help to know that many people grappling with substance abuse have also experienced trauma on some level, either due to recent experiences of adversity or painful events rooted in childhood, such as neglect, abandonment, or abuse.

That said, it’s essential you choose a rehab centre that offers trauma-informed care as well as treating the symptoms of addiction, ensuring you receive well-rounded treatment and support that is successful and long-lasting.

If you are thinking of travelling abroad for treatment or you are already local and want to know more about how we can help support you through an addiction or other emotional difficulties, you have come to the right place.

White River Manor offers world-class trauma-informed addiction treatment in South Africa, combining inpatient care with a holistic approach to drug and alcohol recovery, ensuring you receive personalised support throughout your healing journey.

Here’s what else you can expect when beginning treatment for a substance use disorder or other co-occurring condition at our luxury rehab centre in South Africa.

Trauma-informed treatment to address root causes

Our clinical team uses specialist trauma-informed treatment and care to help you explore, reprocess, and reframe traumatic experiences from your past that may cause or worsen your substance use.

Trauma-informed addiction treatment is a foundational component in long-term recovery, providing a safe and empowering space for individuals to reprocess painful or traumatic experiences that may fuel harmful behaviours.

Once reprocessed, the person will no longer feel the need to numb or avoid painful memories through unhelpful coping patterns like drinking or drug use.

Treatment doesn’t erase the memories, but the capacity to hold these experiences expands over time, leading to a sense of relief and freedom.

Here, we will explore our trauma-informed addiction programmes and their benefits in more detail.

Well-rounded dependency programmes

At White River Manor, each client’s recovery journey begins with a personalised treatment plan carefully developed by our multidisciplinary team of therapists, medical experts, and addiction specialists.

From day one, we focus on understanding your unique story, history, challenges, and goals, using a culturally sensitive and trauma-informed approach that respects your specific needs and lived experience.

Our comprehensive dependency programs at White River Manor begin with an orientation period designed to help clients feel safe, supported, and grounded as they start their healing process, providing a solid foundation for their recovery journey.

We offer a minimum 28-day stay to ensure there is adequate time for meaningful progress and lasting transformation.

This duration allows for a comprehensive assessment of your needs, the development of a personalised treatment plan, and the implementation of evidence-based therapies.

We also tailor our approach to your comfort levels, goals, and preferences, ensuring a personalised and effective treatment experience.

EMDR therapy for deep emotional processing

Dr. Magda Rall - White River Manor - Consultation

White River Manor offers comprehensive EMDR therapy, a highly effective treatment for various types of trauma, including PTSD, complex trauma (C-PTSD), and other stress-related symptoms.

EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, helps you reprocess upsetting or distressing memories in a way that is safe, supportive, and less emotionally disruptive, helping you move forward in your recovery journey.

How EMDR works

EMDR helps individuals reprocess unhealed traumatic memories by targeting the past, present, and future aspects of those experiences.

Through guided eye movements, EMDR stimulates both hemispheres of the brain, enabling the reprocessing and resolution of distressing or traumatic memories.

This treatment mimics the natural neurological processes that occur during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, when the brain integrates and makes sense of emotional experiences.

By engaging visual and working memory systems, EMDR enables the brain to safely revisit and reframe trauma, promoting deep emotional healing and long-term relief from trauma symptoms.

Due to the profound connection between addiction and trauma, EMDR is widely used in many recovery settings to help individuals understand the connection between their past experiences and current coping behaviours and address them.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for lasting change

We also offer behavioural therapy, including CBT programmes, at our luxury rehab centre in South Africa. Therapies such as CBT help you identify and challenge maladaptive thought patterns, replacing them with healthier, more adaptive ways of thinking.

Similar to EMDR, CBT is highly effective in helping to treat co-occurring conditions like depression, anxiety, and substance addiction, all within a trauma-informed framework.

How CBT works

At its core, CBT is based on the idea that our thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and behaviours are closely linked.

When unhelpful or distorted thinking patterns develop, they can lead to emotional distress and harmful behaviours. Over time, this cycle can contribute to the onset or worsening of mental health challenges like substance abuse.

CBT helps individuals recognise and challenge unhelpful thoughts, replacing them with more balanced and constructive perspectives.

With the guidance of a trained therapist, clients learn to shift their mindset, manage difficult emotions more effectively, and adopt healthier behaviours.

This structured, goal-oriented therapy empowers individuals to take an active role in their healing process, fostering greater emotional resilience and improved overall well-being, giving them a sense of control over their recovery.
