There are a variety of things you will need to do to prepare for rehab, from taking care of home, family and work responsibilities to planning your trip to South Africa. Our goal of rehab is to help you recover, turn your life around, and ensure all of the planning and preparation is as smooth and stress-free as possible.

By preparing yourself in advance, you’ll feel more confident to start your journey to world-class treatment and recovery in South Africa. At White River Manor, we’re here to help answer all of your questions and concerns so that you can focus solely on your recovery and starting your new life.

Planning for inpatient rehab treatment

Once you’ve committed to entering an addiction treatment centre, it’s time to think about the process and steps to take in order to be fully prepared. If this is your first time entering rehab, you probably don’t know what to expect.

From flight and visa research to tying up last-minute loose ends at work and home, this list covers everything a UK professional should consider before entering an inpatient treatment rehab centre in South Africa.

1. Do the research

Committing to rehab in South Africa is a huge decision, so take time to research the centre thoroughly. The centre should have an outstanding reputation, transparent and current reviews, cutting-edge treatment approaches, and specialised teams of doctors and therapists. Top-rated facilities will offer luxury surroundings, amenities, personalised treatment plans, and a supportive, holistic healing path to recovery that focuses on the mind, body, and spirit.

Other things to consider:

  • Does this rehab centre meet your specific needs and goals?
  • Is the facility accredited?
  • What types of treatments do they offer?
  • How many staff are on board?
  • What are the qualifications of the staff?
  • What is the length of the program?
  • What is the availability of aftercare programs and support?
  • What is the client success rate?

2. Understand your inpatient rehabilitation treatment plan

Once you’ve decided on your facility, you’ll have a complete assessment with the rehab centre, which will determine the best treatment plan for you. Thoroughly examine the proposed treatment plan offered by the rehab facility. Now is the time to ask questions so you fully understand your individualised plan.

Some things to consider:

3. Apply for the correct visa

UK Nationals do not need a visa to visit South Africa for up to 90 days for tourism or business.

However, it is essential to get the right visa for your stay. Some clients entering rehab in South Africa apply for a medical visa with a minimum six-month stay, so they have the option to extend their treatment if necessary.

British nationals can apply for a medical treatment visa at the South African High Commission in the UK and extend their stay in South Africa if their visa is still valid. The South African Department of Home Affairs provides further information and the required documents for applying for a medical visa.

Please check the expiration date of your visa to ensure you do not overstay. More entry requirements can be found here.

4. Determine your supplemental insurance needs

It is important to take out the correct type of travel insurance as there is no reciprocal healthcare agreement between the United Kingdom and South Africa.

Without it, you won’t be protected in the case of an emergency. Travel insurance is also beneficial to help with flight changes, the costs associated with unexpected travel plans, or making claims in case of theft or loss.

These are the top considerations when purchasing travel insurance for rehab in South Africa:

  • How comprehensive is the policy?
  • Will it cover your specific needs in South Africa?
  • Length of time abroad?
  • Does it cover activities you plan to do while abroad? Keep in mind that some activities, like skydiving, are usually not covered, but you may be able to purchase additional coverage if needed.
  • Do you require coverage for a current medical condition?
  • Does the policy cover you in case of relapse or extra medical treatment linked to your addiction?

5. Prepare and strengthen your support network

Recovery plan - Prepare and strengthen your support network

Entering treatment is a huge decision. Do you have someone lined up to support you during recovery? If you’re able to and feel comfortable opening up about your plans, now is the time. It’s important that you share your decision with those around you so you can focus on your treatment without worrying about what to say or what others might say.

From family and friends to peers, there’s strength in knowing someone is there for you to lean on. Having a solid network to encourage and support you throughout treatment can be very beneficial for your recovery. In the weeks leading up to your departure, you may feel overwhelmed with everything you have yet to do, but do make time for the positive people in your life, they want the best for you!

6. Take care of work responsibilities

Unfortunately, addiction is often surrounded by negative stigma and silence. This makes telling others about your plans—especially your employer—one of the toughest challenges. While being honest is difficult, you’ll need to notify your employer.

First, you’ll need to inform your employer about your rehab plans and discuss the necessary time off required for treatment. Make sure to propose a backup plan for handling your work responsibilities during rehab and an entry plan once you return. While most employers don’t need to know the specifics of your plan, you may find that being as honest and transparent about your addiction and treatment is the best way to go. Honesty will be a powerful tool in your recovery journey.

7. Arrange child care and pet care as needed

If you have childcare or pet care needs, try to make arrangements as far in advance as possible. Perhaps that looks like asking a family member or close friend to help out, or you might have to hire professional care providers in your absence, such as a live-in nanny, a professional house sitter/pet sitter, or a boarding facility for pets.

Depending on your children’s age, it could be helpful to have an age-appropriate discussion about why you’ll be gone. This can greatly alleviate any fears or concerns they might have in your absence.

Knowing everything is covered and taken care of will put your mind at ease so you can take care of yourself.

8. Tie up any outstanding or ongoing financial or legal obligations

Recovery plan - Tie Up Any Outstanding or Ongoing Financial or Legal Obligations

Everyone has to pay the bills, so if you haven’t already, sign up for automatic payments or speak to a trusted family member who will ensure your bills are paid on time. This is also a good opportunity to cancel any unnecessary subscriptions or memberships.

Do you have any legal issues, such as pending court cases or outstanding warrants or tickets? Before entering rehab, you absolutely must address these matters. If needed, inform the courts and your attorney that you’ll be attending treatment.

9. Prepare mentally and emotionally

Entering rehab is a challenging and emotionally charged experience. The process can bring up a range of feelings, from fear to hope, so you’ll need to mentally prepare yourself before starting treatment. This is the perfect time to confide in your therapist or a trusted friend or loved one about your concerns. Set realistic goals and remind yourself that challenges can become opportunities for long-lasting recovery.

It’s important to manage your stress and anxiety during this time so you enter treatment with a positive attitude. What does that look like to you? It could be working out, taking a walk or reading a good book. Or, you might find mindfulness techniques, meditation or yoga to be especially helpful for anxiety and stress management. Whatever it is, try to find ways to relax and calm your mind.

10. Only pack the essentials

While you may be tempted to throw in every comfort item you own, packing too many things could be a distraction. It’s far better to only pack the essentials.

A short list might include:

  • Proper clothing for the location and weather
  • Alcohol-free toiletries and personal hygiene items
  • Legal documents required for admission
  • Prescription medications (check with facility)
  • Extra cash, credit or debit card
  • Emergency contact information
  • Personal items, such as photos, a special pillow case or a journal
