Qualified as a music therapist (M. Mus) and positive psychologist (M. A.), Petra’s passion lies in helping people work through trauma, life changes and finding their own resources. She works on a psychodynamic level using music that is suited to connect the conscious mind to the unconscious soul, in a safe and contained environment. She has achieved remarkable results in a relatively short period with clients.
Her two main foci are Guided Imagery and Music (GIM) and Music and Imagery (MI). In GIM, visualisation is stimulated through listening to music. The client is led into a deeply relaxed state and guided by the therapist through relevant questions according to an intention set by the client. MI uses the music of the client’s choice to reinforce dormant resources that can empower the client to see and become their best self. Both these methods are empowering the client, as it is tailored to each individual’s needs and the interpretation or meaning-making is that of the client.
Petra is enrolled for a postgraduate diploma in addiction care through the University of Stellenbosch, which will make her better qualified, in addition to her experience, to work in the field of rehabilitation.
Through the positive psychology lens, it is easier to focus on strengths rather than what is lacking. This is also helpful for personal growth, insight and recovering from addiction.
